While we do not raise enough to remove anyone’s financial concerns entirely, we are successful, however, in changing the way they view the future.
We show them they are never alone, we show them that assistance comes in many forms. They learn strangers are typically very willing to assist other strangers. They experience inner joy having several months of expenses taken care of, they find out that money is only one of the gifts they receive. Recipients have realized their perspective of the future changes, they realize prayers, cards and well wishes are just as important in providing faith and hope.

Nate Silva is 36 yrs old, employed as a manager at 5 guys in Plymouth who has excelled in that position earning recognition from his peers and multiple awards from the company. In October 2025 he fell at work and hurt his back. Diagnosis was fractured vertebrae and he has been unable to work since. At end of December 2025 he started to lose feeling and movement in his legs. More testing revealed he had Cancer in his spine, lungs, brain and blood. The cancer in his spine is the cause of paralysis. He is currently going through treatment at Beth Isreal Boston multiple days a week. At certain points in time he has had to endure 10 days in a row of treatments. He has 3 different teams of doctors. Chemo and immune therapy will begin soon.
This sudden unexpected turn in life has caused the entire Silva family to put aside their individual desires and needs and to do whatever they can to assist Nate. Here is a glimpse into a typical day for Silva Family since Nates diagnosis, Nate is currently paralyzed in both legs and needs 24 hour care. The family moved him out of his apartment and into his parents’ family room due to the inability to move Nate up and down stairs. Brian and Colleen carry their son to the car and drive him to Boston for treatments, stay with him, drive him home, carry him back into the house and then go to work while other family members take turns caring for Nate.
On top of regular medical bills there is a constantly growing list of things the family requires to meet Nates medical needs. Insurance does not cover his care entirely, there are countless things the family is forced to pay for. Brian and Colleen choose to be with him while he goes through his treatments then go to work to recharge mentally by fulfilling normal obligations. The decrease in work hours has greatly affected their income negatively and is impacting their ability to purchase the items needed to assist Nate and his well-being.
These challenges are hard for any family to comprehend and battle. Now consider these other events they have been forced to deal with, their 46-year-old son David was murdered on December 12, 2024. Colleen’s older sister Maureen died on December 9, 2025, and Brian’s sister died on February 20, 2026 from cancer she was diagnosed at the end of October, 2025.
As I have always said over the years we have hosted this event. While we do not raise enough money to change the situation or remove anyone’s financial concerns entirely, we are successful in changing the way they view life and the future. We show them they are never alone, we show them that assistance comes in many forms. They learn strangers are typically very willing to assist other strangers. They experience inner joy from the assistance received, relief for having several months of expenses taken care of, they find out that money is only one of the gifts they receive. Recipients have realized their perspective of the future changes, they realize prayers, cards and well wishes are just as important in providing faith and hope.
Nathan already embraced a winning disposition. Despite his prognosis and current challenges. He stays mentally sharp by remaining positive and trying to show others carrying heavy burdens in life to give it their all and keep the Faith by journaling his journey. You can view that here
